Barmaids with a passion for art are hoping to get the creative juices flowing by hosting a networking event down the pub.

Art graduates Amy Lilley and Lucy Norton, are premiering ‘Art and Ale’ at Harry’s Bar on Wednesday from 5.30pm.

The 22-year-olds hope the informal event at the award-winning bar off Westgate will capture the imagination of people who might never dream of setting foot in a gallery.

Miss Lilley said : “It’s a good excuse for arty and creative people in Wakefield to get together, chat and collaborate.”

The duo, who met last year doing voluntary work at The Orangery, believe that craft beer and art are a perfect marriage. Harry’s Bar has hosted artwork on its walls for six years.

Miss Lilley added: “We find that real ale and art mix really well. Harry’s Bar showcases local brewers and we showcase local artists.”

The artists, who are part of the Art Place initiative, will also hold a fundraising art sale later this month in a pop-up gallery at a disused city shop.

Art Place, a non-profit making collective which supports emerging and local artists, will transform an empty shop on Marygate into an exhibition space.

The art sale on Wednesday, May 28, which coincides with the city’s popular Art Walk, will offer pieces at a bargain price of £10 from artists who can sometimes command £1,000.

Miss Lilley said: “We want to make it really accessible. We want to give them the chance to come home with a really nice piece of art.”

Pictures will also be displayed in the store’s window for two months. Prospective buyers will be able to use contact details posted in the window.

The organisers are now calling on amateur, professional and student artists to submit work for the project, which will help with running costs.

For more information or to submit work before the May 19 deadline please contact artplacewf1@gmail.com or on Twitter @ArtPlacewf1.
