@LondonMarathon - Wakefield runners ready to pound capital city streets

Waiting for Video...

Lost loved ones and personal goals have inspired runners from across the city to take part in this weekend’s London Marathon.

Emma Denny and Louise Wolstencroft will be raising money for Victim Support, in memory of murdered teenagers Kim Frank and Samantha Sykes, who were stabbed to death by Ahmad Otak in Eastmoor on March 9, 2012.

Miss Denny, 28, of Netherton, Kim Frank’s cousin, said: “We’re running in memory of these beautiful girls to help others that suffer through no fault of their own.”

Richard Eggleston, of Eggleston Limousines, will run the 26.2 mile course from Greenwich Park to the Mall, in memory of friend Dawn Brickwood, of Outwood, who lost her battle with the bowel cancer earlier this year.

Mrs Brickwood was secretary of the Bevin Community Group, in Outwood, and the wife of Mr Eggleston’s best friend Melvyn.

Mr Eggleston, 46, said: “Dawn was such a lovely person, who did so much for so many and bowel cancer is a cause close to my heart as I lost my dad to it in 2012.

“This will be my third marathon. It never gets any easier, but I am hoping to finish and do my best for a good cause.”

Siblings Lauren and Liam Crawley, from Stanley, hope to raise more than £2,500 for Diabetes UK, in memory of their sister Danielle, who had type 1 diabetes and died in 2009 after suffering a seizure.

Miss Crawley, 33, said: “Danielle didn’t give up without a fight. That’s what gives me the motivation to try to raise money for the charity and raise awareness. Not everyone knows just how serious diabetes can be which is why I like to fly the flag for it.”

Lorraine Morgan has osteoarthritis and her daughter Sophie has the movement disorder, dystonia. Both are running for the Spinal Injuries Association.

Their family friend Sophie Carrigill was involved in a serious car accident in August 2010, which left her paralysed from the waist down. She underwent rehabilitation at the Spinal Injuries Unit at Pinderfields Hospital, and now goes to university and is a member of the GB Paralympic Wheelchair Basket Ball team.

Wakefield Council’s service director for communities, Antony Sadler, is running for the British Heart Foundation and Take Heart.

He chose to run in memory of the former Mayor of Wakefield, Coun Brian Holmes, who died of a heart attack in October last year and who supported the both charities during his time in office.

He said: “I am running these marathons in tribute to the passion Coun Holmes demonstrated for his long service to the Wakefield district and to continue his fundraising legacy.

“My own family was directly affected by heart disease in 2004, when my father suffered a heart attack. I am running to give something back for the kind support and services provided to my father and us at the Yorkshire Heart Centre.”

Shadow chancellor and Morley and Outwood MP, Ed Balls, will again be running for Whizz-Kidz and Action for Stammering Children.

This year nine runners will be raising funds for Wakefield Hospice, they are:

l Fiona Anderson, 24 from Sandal,

l Claire Burns, 40 from Horbury, and her daughter Sophie,

l Helen McKinlay-Smith, 38 from Flockton,

l Andy Sibson from Altofts

l Gary Wainwright formerly of Ossett

l Ed Jones, 22

l Michelle Poole, 50, from Ossett

l Debbie Bland from Menston.

Fundraiser Keeley Harrison said: “We would like to wish all our marathon runners good luck for Sunday. They have all done so well with their training and shown so much commitment and dedication. All the runners have been raising sponsorship and we expect that they will raise over £11,000 in total for the hospice which is an amazing achievement, we are so grateful to each and every one of them for choosing to support Wakefield Hospice.”
