Man Utd fan meets his hero

Chris Elliot with Bryan Robson

A FOOTBALL fan got to train with his ‘heroes’ during preparations for a charity trek.

Chris Elliot of Stanley will walk the length of Hadrian’s Wall next month to raise money for the Manchester United Foundation.

The 36-year-old has been a life-long supporter of the club and was invited down to their first-team training centre last week, where many of the Premiership stars work out.

And while taking part in a fitness session to get ready for the 26-mile hike, he met a few familiar faces.

Mr Elliot, director of Northern Light Media, based on Sandy Walk, said: “I love the club. We met Bryan Robson and I can remember being in the Bryan Robson Fan Club when I was ten. I didn’t tell him that, I thought he might feel a bit old, but he’s one of my heroes.”

Along with 11 fellow trekkers, Mr Elliot received fitness and nutritional advice from Tony Strudwick, head of sport science at the club.

The team were then allowed behind the scenes to experience a full training session in the sports hall using the equipment that the 19 times Premier League Champions train with on a daily basis.

Mr Elliot added: “I was motivated to get involved because I’ve been a fan for 30 years and I wanted to lose some weight.”

He will also be joined by former England and United midfielder Nicky Butt during the trek from October 9 to 11.
