True friends are hard to find but Millie Bucknall proved she was one in a million when she had her head shaved to help her best friend, who is battling cancer, say thank you to the charity which helps make her time in hospital more pleasant.
Ella Rigg was diagnosed with neuroblastoma just before Christmas.
She had started complaining of stomach aches in September. Then, just after her seventh birthday in November, tests revealed every parent’s worst nightmare.
Since then, she and her family have been determined to raise money for Candlelighters with the help of friends like Millie, 7, who had her lovely long locks shaved off during a Hair Gone event at Hendal Primary School last Friday, which together with a recent bake-off, has raised more than £2,800.
Ella’s dad Chris said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been supporting us, and once again to the staff, parents and children of Hendal Primary School, who made the events a success.
“Special thanks has to go to the beautiful Millie Bucknall. Ella is our little superstar, and on Friday, Millie proved to be a super friend.”
Mr Rigg braved having his legs waxed on the day and pupil mentor Nick Brewer decided to bid farewell to his beard for the cause.
He added: “What we did was nothing compared to Millie’s sacrifice. She was the real star of the show.”
Ella has undergone a few rounds of chemotherapy treatment for the aggressive type of cancer, including one this week, and has months more ahead of her.
