Mystery remains over the missing carvings

HOLY carvings that disappeared from St Peter’s Church in Stanley are still missing.

Last week the Express reported how some of the 16 carvings, known as misericords, may have been lost forever because of a mistake made by the Wakefield Disocese.

The Bishop of Wakefield, Rt Rev Tony Robinson said he and his colleagues had no idea when the misericords vanished from the derelict church which is plagued by vandals, but admitted a contractor had been let in and given permission to take unspecified ‘loose fittings’ on health and safety grounds.

Police carried out an investigation into a reported burglary back in March, and although no charges were ever brought, police confirmed a number of items had been taken under an agreement between the church and a contractor.

Seven of the misericords have been tracked down, but the whereabouts of the rest remains a mystery and a campaign launched last week in a bid to find them, has so far failed to bring them back.

Anyone with information should contact the Bishop on 01924 250781.
