Nurse struck off for falsifying records on ‘mad shift’ at Pinderfields

A nurse who falsified records when she was looking after a patient who died of a heart attack can no longer work in the profession.

Janet Helen Larkin was given a striking off order by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for the misconduct while working at Pinderfields Hospital in March 2013.

An NMC panel was told she recorded that she checked on the elderly woman on ward 42 at hourly intervals between 1pm and 7pm.

But after the patient suffered a heart attack and died just after 1pm it was discovered that she had falsely pre-recorded entries for assessing pain and giving medication.

A judgement from the hearing in London, said: ”This had the potential to put the patient at risk of harm by misleading clinical colleagues.”

Larkin, who was sacked by Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust after a disciplinary hearing, had an unblemished 17-year record.

She had stated it was a “busy, mad shift” and she was supporting a new colleague at the hospital.

But the panel concluded the only appropriate sanction was a striking-off order.
