The ophthalmology unit, which opened last year as part of a re-organisation of services at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, got a commendation in Wakefield Civic Society’s 2016 Design Awards.

The centre got a Best New Build commendation, presented at the society’s annual general meeting at Wakefield Town Hall.

The building was officially opened last September by Wakefield MP Mary Creagh after being fitted with specialist equipment for treating eye conditions including macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Patients and hospital staff were involved in the design of the centre, which has seven consultation rooms, seven treatment rooms and five diagnostic rooms.

A Mid Yorkshire hospitals spokesperson said: “Receiving a commendation in the Wakefield Civic Society’s Design Awards is testament to the project management, architecture and hard work of the construction staff.”
