Preparing for showdown: Roaring on Trinity to cup final glory

And supporters across the city are hoping to roar Wakefield Trinity on to Challenge Cup glory when they do battle in the semi-final this weekend.

They face Warrington Wolves at Leigh on Saturday in what Trinity hooker Mikey Sio says it is one of the biggest games this team has ever played.

Victory would take them to the cup final at Wembley for the first time since losing to Widnes in 1979.

Sio told the Express: “This game will be one of the biggest games in some of our careers and I’m sure all the players will relish the opportunity.

“I watched the final at Wembley last year and the atmosphere was crazy. I can picture myself playing in that game. It’s a big occasion and I want to be a part of it.”

Trinity are hoping to lift the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup for the sixth time if they reach the final this year.

David Hinchliffe, lifelong Trinity fan and former Wakefield MP, said: “I was there in the 1979 final and I have been looking forward to going back ever since - there’s nothing like Wembley.

“Like most long standing supporters I am delighted at the progress being made on the pitch.

“I think all at the club should be commended for what they have achieved this season.”

Sio said the club is carrying a couple of injuries after their last game of the regular season against rivals Castleford Tigers at Belle Vue on Sunday.

And despite losing to Castleford, the club have secured a top-eight finish in the league to take them through to the Super 8s competition.

The last time Trinity won the cup was in the 1962-63 season when they beat Wigan.

Sio said: “Our fans are a big part of our success, they are always vocal and we feed off their energy.

“A big crowd at Leigh in the semi-final will take us a long way in the game.”

In the league this year, Trinity beat Warrington at Belle Vue but lost to the Wolves in the away fixture.

Trinity coach Chris Chester held a press conference with prop Nick Scruton in Wakefield city centre at the Ladbrokes bookies on Tuesday.

The semi-final clash takes place at 2.30pm on Saturday.

And the winner will book a place in the final against either Wigan Warriors or Hull FC, who play each other tonight at 8pm.
