Sports clubs and teams could bag themselves a new pitch at a knockdown price in the new year.
Wakefield Council is currently holding a consultation on proposals to lease land at Reid Park, in Horbury Bridge, and at Slack Lane and Kettlethorpe Lake, in Newmillerdam.
Councillors want to offer the spaces to local sports clubs and teams at a peppercorn rent.
The council has asked people for their comments on the move before any decision to lease the sites is made.
Judith Badger, Wakefield Council’s director of finance, property and resource, said: “We have a duty to advertise any changes to land use, whether this includes selling off land or, as in these cases, offering a long term lease to local groups at minimal or no costs.
“We hope that by leasing the land in this way it will secure the future for these local sports clubs.”
Other sites being considered include Church Road, Altofts, and St Mary’s Road in Lee Brigg. The council has invited people to write in with their views on the idea.
It would also like to hear from teams or clubs which may be interested in the leasing the land.
A spokeswoman from the council stressed the sites were not being sold.
The deadline for comments is January 3.
