Student photographers capture the hidden Wakefield

Talented photography and creative media students have a selection of their work on display at waterside gallery in the city.

And the public can choose their favourites as part of the competition.

The exhibition features photographs taken by more than 70 young people from schools and colleges across the district. The theme for the competition was set by photographer Martin Parr, with images depicting subjects like the remains of decaying buildings, the natural landscape, street scenes, domestic animals, school friends and family members.

College students Levi Boston, Megan Wilkinson, Fleur Chinery, Leah Derry and Chloe Fitton are now hoping members of the public will vote for their images at the Hepworth where the vote runs until Monday, May 3.

Leah Derry, commenting on the news that her work had been shortlisted, said: “Having the opportunity to enter the competition was exciting enough, but then to be chosen to exhibit my image in the Hepworth is amazing, I’m over the moon.”

Photography lecturer Sarah Squires said: “The entire photography team are really proud of all the students who got involved. The five students who are going to be exhibiting have worked really hard, they have developed so much recently and it’s clearly made a difference. We wish them all the best during the public vote.”
