On Saturday August 13 and Sunday August 14 the beach is back in Wakefield city centre for its free annual seaside event. The seaside is coming to Castleford on Saturday August 20.

Bring a bucket and spade, as both seaside events will have a big beach for making sandcastles. There’s also free donkey rides, Punch and Judy shows, face painting and balloon modelling.

There will be free workshops, a variety of market stalls and food providers. This year’s seaside-themed street entertainment will include stilt walking lobsters and walkabout pirates.

Other attractions in Wakefield will include a Victorian carousel (a small charge applies) and a TV screen featuring themed films including Pirates of the Caribbean, Finding Nemo, and Lilo and Stitch.

Seaside in Wakefield is on Saturday August 13, 10am–5pm, and Sunday August 14, 10am–4pm. All activity takes place at Wakefield Cathedral Precinct.

The seaside in Castleford is on Saturday August 20, 10am–4pm, in the heart of Castleford town centre.

Wakefield Council has launched a fun-packed summer planner full of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The planner is available to download from the council’s website and shows events for every day of the school holidays, making it easier for parents and carers to keep the children entertained all summer long.

The council is holding various events at its parks, leisure centres, museums, libraries and castles. The planner makes it easy for families to see what’s-on and take part in the many activities on offer.

Coun Shaw said: “Keeping the kids entertained all summer can be a real challenge. We hope we’ve made it a little bit easier for families to see what’s happening across the district so they can plan in lots of fun and exciting things for everyone to do.

The planner can be downloaded from www.experiencewakefield.co.uk/summer It shows every day throughout the school holidays with a suggested activity on each, including many Olympic-themed events.
