The Voice UK singer Sophie May Williams has been writing her own material ahead of the competition’s battle stage.

The teenage singer has been busy creating new songs, busking at Trinity Walk and Trinity Leeds, as well as gigging in local pubs and clubs.

Sophie May, 17, appeared on the blind auditions of the BBC show on Saturday, January 18, when she sang Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time.

She was put through to the next stage by Black Eyed Peas star Will-i-am, who left it to the last minute to push his button and spin his chair around.

Since appearing on television, the Outwood Grange Academy student has been preparing for the battle stage, due to be aired later this year, which will see her pitted against another one of Will-i-am’s contestants.

She is one of 12 singers on Team Will. The other three coaches are Kylie Minogue, Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson and Sir Tom Jones.

Sophie May, of The Orchard, Wrenthorpe, said: “I am really excited about the battle stage. I have met some amazing people so far and it has just been so much fun.

“My friends and family are really excited for me as well and they keep talking to me about the show. They have been so supportive. But at school everyone is just treating me normally, which is how I prefer it, to be honest.

“I’ve been writing some new songs and busking around town, just to practice my set. I’m going to continue busking over the next few weeks and I am recording some songs to put on YouTube as well. It is just about exposure and doing some promotion too.”

The battle stage, which will whittle each team down to seven, will be shown on TV around March time.

The next steps for Sophie May, if she is successful, would be the knockout stage and finally the live shows with audience voting.

Sophie May is following in the steps of fellow Outwood Grange Academy student Frances Wood, who made it to the quarter finals of the show two years ago and also was part of team Will-i-am.
