Prolific fundraiser Tom Hacker is set to tackle his biggest challenge to date in memory of his mum.

The 26-year-old from Horbury will run six marathons in six days to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mr Hacker, who lost his mum Susan to cancer 13 years ago, has already raised £30,000 for cancer charities by walking 1,000 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End in 28 days back in 2007 and cycling the same route in six days in 2011.

He now aims to raise a further £20,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, which will be used to fund a new nursing post.

On Monday he sets off on to complete the 165-mile coast-to-coast challenge starting in Liverpool before heading back across the Pennines and finish at Spurn Point on the east coast.

He said: “I was 13 when I lost my mum to cancer and my life has never been the same since.”

“This is 100 percent my biggest challenge yet.

“I have been training for 10 months and anyone who is following my progress on my Facebook page will know it’s been gruelling at times.

“This has been a long and painful journey for me.

“Fundraising helps me deal with what has happened and also create real change for those living with cancer today.

“The pain, the sacrifice, it’s all worth it.”

In 2012 Mr Hacker, of Tynedale Close, was recognised for his charity work when he was selected to carry the Olympic torch between Lundwood and Barnsley.

Hayley Cooke, Macmillan Cancer Support’s fundraising manager, said: “We are absolutely blown away by Tom’s incredible commitment to this challenge and to raising vital funds for Macmillan.

“His challenge really is life changing, not just for him but for the hundreds of people that Macmillan will be able to reach thanks to his support.”
