Plans for a luxury hotel at Bretton Hall were approved by a planning committee.
Developers Rushbond plc are keen to get moving with the 120-bedroom hotel and business park, which would create up to 400 jobs.
But because of the amount of office space being proposed – about 100,000 sq ft – the application will have to be referred to government ministers for final approval.
And planning officers said such decisions normally took about 28 days.
Rushbond said it was hoping to start work later this year, and would have the hotel built by 2015.
Managing director Jonathan Maud said: “We now have a fantastic opportunity to breathe new life into Bretton Hall, one of Yorkshire’s most magnificent estates, for future generations to experience.
“There is a tremendous sense of energy in the city of Wakefield and across Yorkshire that we are very excited to be a part of, and it is great news that we are about to make a shared vision a reality.”
Coun Peter Box, leader of Wakefield Council, said he was delighted with the committee’s decision.
He said: “This will be a big boost to the local economy, creating jobs and adding a new attraction to our already strong tourism base. I look forward to seeing this ambitious project get off the ground as soon as possible.”
Rushbond is still in talks with several operators which could deliver and manage the hotel.
The business park will include a restaurant and café and 500 parking spaces.
