Wednesday’s Artwalk around Wakefield includes an installation of straws in a crypt and a renowned artist exhibiting in a pub.

Artist Jaimini Patel has turned a dark, medieval crypt in Chantry Chapel into a colourful art installation full of straws.

She will unveil “ASCENDING” on the city’s Artwalk from 5pm to 9pm on Wednesday.

The artist said: “The metre long, brightly coloured drinking straws had caught my eye a few years ago and this dark space immersed in water seemed to be a fitting home for them. My instinct was right – the light from the thin windows transforms the straws into beams of light.”

ASCENDING will also be on show during selected times in August.

Meanwhile the work of an internationally renowned artist will be hung in a city pub.

Creations by paper sculptor Richard Sweeney will be unveiled at Harry’s Bar, off Smyth Street, from Wednesday at 5pm on the Artwalk.

The two-month exhibition is part of ArtPlace’s “Art and Ale” initiative.
