The city’s swimming pool will be closed during the Easter school holidays for urgent repairs.

A faulty drainage channel installed during the construction of the £10m Sun Lane Leisure Centre has caused a leak.

Builders will work around the clock to get the problems fixed while it is closed from Saturday, April 12, to Saturday, April 26.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for culture, sport and libraries, said: “There really is no good time to close a popular swimming pool and we apologise to customers for the inconvenience.

“Issues like this are not uncommon especially in large building projects and although it is not a major problem we have to close the pool to enable it to be fixed.

“The work needs to be done quickly to ensure further damage isn’t caused.

“With this in mind we carried out detailed analysis to identify when we could close the pool with least disruption. This showed that closing during a school holiday will have a lesser impact on customers than closing during term time.”

The defective drainage channel has been causing a leak on the pool side.

Contractors Willmott Dixon have been working overnight to try and fix it for several weeks.

But further work is needed which can only be done by closing the pool.

The full cost of the repair work is being covered by the contractor who is also reimbursing the council for any lost income.

Coun Dagger said: “Our contractors are fully committed to resolving this as quickly as possible and will be working throughout the entire Easter period, including at night.”

During the closure the gym and other facilities will remain open.

In October 2012 the leisure centre opened after a one month delay with the construction works.

Coun Dagger said: “There are other pools in the district which are open in the Easter holidays, so people can still enjoy swimming activities.

“It is business as usual for the rest of the facilities at Sun Lane Leisure enabling people to continue using the gym and all the other dry side facilities.”
