Work to start on hundreds of homes in City Fields masterplan

Work will start this month on the first phase of a multi-million pound development scheme on the east side of the city.

Miller Homes will begin building up to 500 houses near Aberford Road as part of the City Fields masterplan.

The first stage of the development will also include the construction of the first section of the Wakefield Eastern Relief Road.

The City Fields scheme is one of the biggest regeneration initiatives ever seen in the city and is expected to attract thousands of new jobs and £500m of investment.

Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for economic growth and skills, said: “The council is still very much committed to the City Fields development and we’re pleased that work will soon start on the first phase of houses.

“The whole development will re-energise a large part of the district and provide some fantastic places to live, work and enjoy, as well as creating a great road link to help ease traffic in and around the city.”

The work comes after Wakefield Council’s planning committee voted through the proposals, by architect firm Spawforths on behalf of Miller Homes, earlier this year.

The council has now submitted a planning application for further stages of the relief road scheme and if the process goes smoothly, a decision is expected in December.

The whole City Fields development could take up to 20 years to complete.

A further 100 homes could also be built in Crigglestone, under a separate proposal.

Wakefield Council granted outline planning permission for up to 129 properties at Standbridge Lane.

Mark Johnson, on behalf of applicants Ben Bailey Homes and Redcats UK, submitted the application for the two and three storey homes, which would be a mix of one bed apartments and two, three, four or five bedroom townhouses, detached and semi-detached properties.

The Redcats warehouse buildings, currently on the 3.7 hectare site, would be demolished in order for the houses to be built, if the final proposals are approved.

When complete, the redevelopment scheme could include:

- 2,500 new homes

- the Wakefield Eastern Relief Road

- a primary school

- a network of green spaces

- sports pitches and equipped children’s play areas

- a waterfront area with cafes, bars, shops and restaurants

- 3,200 long term jobs
