Work to start on transformation of Kirkgate Railway Station

Council and Groundwork staff celebrating securing all the funding for the Kirkgate Station redevelopment programme and giving a press conference about it today.

Council and Groundwork staff celebrating securing all the funding for the Kirkgate Station redevelopment programme and giving a press conference about it today.

Work is expected to start to transform Kirkgate Railway Station next month.

The £4.6m project, which is being spearheaded by regeneration charity Groundwork Wakefield, will be completed within a year.

In 2009 the Wakefield Express launched its Staff Our Station campaign to fight for the station to be manned after a young woman was raped in the subway.

Coun Peter Box, Leader of Wakefield Council, said: “This is great news for Wakefield, the transformation of this station has been a long time coming and will be a massive boost to the regeneration of the area and plays a key role in the overall master plan.

It will provide an important gateway to the city, which will welcome both visitors and residents and I’m pleased work will be starting shortly.”
