David Hall-Matthews - Lib Dem candidate for Hemsworth.

Dr David Hall-Matthews, 38, is a politics lecturer at Leeds University. He is married and enjoys football, running and hill-walking. He believes strongly that voters have been let down by Tony Blair's government. "Local communities need to be given a good reason to trust politicians again after all the lies, spin and broken promises of the last eight years," he says, "and that's what I and the Liberal Democrats plan to do."

David will listen long and hard to local people and fight to improve their lives. Instead of expensive gimmicks like identity cards and child trust funds, he will argue for simple and effective policies that people actually want and need, like 10,000 more real policemen on the beat and tougher sentences for drug dealers, to reduce crime and the fear of crime. Like more local schools, more teachers and smaller primary school classes, to give every child a fair start in life. Like free personal care, so you don't have to sell your home when you're ill.

David believes that the way the government has run the economy is fundamentally unfair. Local people are paying too much in council tax and being ignored by Westminster. Liberal Democrats will axe the tax and increase pensions straight away. We will put patients first, whether at PinderfieldS or Pontefract, and let doctors and nurses get on with their jobs. And we will never again waste billions of pounds and put our boys in danger on a needless war like Iraq.
