David Ridgway - Lib Dem candidate for Wakefield
My name is David Ridgway and I am the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Wakefield Constituency. Now 59 years old, I am married with three children. My interests include gardening, team sports, particularly cricket, music, the community and politics. I joined the Liberal Party in 1973 and have twice been the local LibDem European candidate and have twice stood for Parliament, in the Hemsworth by-election in 1996 and for Normanton in 1997. For eight years to 2004, I was a local Kirklees councillo
This is a vital election for many people. The LibDems proudly present a radical platform for positive change. Our manifesto is fully costed and makes no wild and unattainable promises. There are three major areas which will ultimately affect the lives of each constituent in Wakefield.
Council tax is unfair and has become far too high a financial burden for too many. And it will rise massively following the current domestic house rating revaluation. We will abolish council tax and introduce a local income tax, based on an individual's ability to pay. This will save 450 yearly from the typical family's bills.
Student debt is rising. We will scrap student tuition fees to ensure no-one is denied the opportunity to attend university.
Pensioners' incomes continue to lose value. We will immediately increase the pension by 100 per month for the over 75s, introduce free personal care when most needed, introduce free off-peak travel on buses and increase funding to provide 10,000 more police on the streets.
