Ghost story

by Jim Anderson - Runner up

Once there was a man named Fred. Fred was a kind, young man who lived in

Kirkburton in West Yorkshire. His house was situated on the outskirts of

Kirkburton and he wanted to move closer to his newspaper shop which was in

the centre.

He was surprised to find an ideal house for much less money than

he thought. He paid a fraction of the normal price because it was right next to

a graveyard. -

One night, it was so cold in the house that Fred went to bed in his coat! But

then, out of his window he saw two red eyes and the outline of a dog, Fred was

sure it hadn't been there before.

Fred got out of bed and decided to go to the graveyard and inspect the dog. To

his shock he found a caretaker sitting in a chair, dead. He was as white as

snow, although he had no visible injuries. Fred inspected his eyes- they were

red. Fred gasped as hesaw this but he knew he had to carry on. So with a deep

breath he took the caretaker's torch and ploughed on, never looking back.

Finally he could see the dog in the distance, but mysteriously it had moved

again. Instead of facing his window, it was facing him. For the next hour he

stood watching it, slowly moving backwards but every time he blinked it

moved back towards him.

Fred remembered that he had read, long ago, about the legend of Black Shep, (

also known as the Yorkshire Hellhound. lt was said that many years ago, a

sheepdog had jumped onto a narrow ledge to stay with a sheep that had

fallen. The dog barked and barked for the shepherd to come to rescue the

sheep, but when the shepherd arrived he looked down at the animals and

decided it was too dangerous to go down. Instead, he walked away, with the

dog's howls in his ears. The legend was that the dog died but didn't forgive the

cowardly shepherd, and that the dog's ghost walked the earth seeking revenge

on all mankind. If the dog made eye contact with you, then you would instantly

die. Fred was convinced that he was looking at this ghost-dog.

Fred decided to run back to his house and get a mirror. He thought that if the

dog looked at itself, then it would kill itself. It was a long walk back to his

house, but the journey back into the graveyard was even longer. Fred cou|dn't

find the dog again at first, butjust as he was giving up hope,, he saw a shadow

move in the bushes to his side. Fred quickly grabbed the mirror and shouted

into the dark. As he peered over the top of his mirror he saw two red eyes

swing round in his direction. The next moment, there was a flash of light and a

feeling of intense cold.

The last thought that went through Fred's mind was that the eyes had glanced

at him moments before he had moved the mirrdr. Fred's body was found the

next morning, and there was no visible explanation as to how he had died.
