Jon Trickett - Labour candidate for Hemsworth
When I was first elected to Parliament in 1996 I promised to stand up for my beliefs and fight for the interests of local people. I want a more equal country. I have supported measures to increase fairness, helped attract investment to our area and stood up for the many people who were let down by the Tories. However where I have disagreed with the Government – for example on the war with Iraq, foundation hospitals or top up fees – I have not been afraid to say so
.
Labour's policies are beginning to make a real difference to our area.
The New Deal has helped over 2000 local people back into work, house prices have risen, school standards have improved and the minimum wage and better support for pensioners have helped lift many thousands of people in our area out of poverty.
My office has also stood up for local people, helping hundreds of locals who have needed assistance each year. We have helped many former miners, winning over 68 million in compensation for local people so far.
There is much more that needs to be done if we are to correct the decades of Tory neglect. So at this election we face a choice: either go back to the right wing politics which have so damaged our area or go forward, fighting hard for the socialist policies that will help our area. If you vote for me I will back a fairer deal for our pensioners, better local school and hospitals as well as more investment and jobs in our area.
