Jonathan Mortimer - Conservative candidate for Hemsworth

THE Labour government was elected with a huge majority, not just once but twice, and with that vote came a huge expectation of change for the better.

Many Hemsworth residents gave Labour that chance to govern in 1997. Many tell me that by 2001 they had become disappointed that so little had been achieved. By 2005 many tell me that they cannot bring themselves to vote Labour in 2005.

Labour have wasted their opportunity to make a difference. I am shocked by how little difference a Labour MP and a Labour Government has made for the people of Hemsworth.

Labour wants to control what we eat, what we do in our spare time and even how we raise our children. But Labour will not control the children disrupting our classrooms, the yobs committing crimes on our streets and the people illegally coming into our country.

Labour have done more to damage the confidence of the public in politicians than any other party. People know that the spin on statistics applies not just to the 45 minute claim in the Iraq dossier but to most government announcements.

This is why I believe we need an alternative.

Our national election campaign is making it clear that our priorities are more police, cleaner hospitals, lower taxes, school discipline, controlled immigration and accountability.

If elected my local priorities will be zero tolerance of crime, giving the young more opportunities, encouraging new investment, improving housing and protecting our open spaces.
