£3.6m funding bid for new archives home in Kirkgate gets boost

PLANS to give invaluable historical documents a brand new home are likely to go ahead after funders pledged their support on Monday.
Council bosses want to move the West Yorkshire Archives Service to a purpose-built new building in the Kirkgate area, which is due to be redeveloped.
But the plan depends on the outcome of a £3.6m Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) bid.
This week the HLF approved a £200,000 development grant to get the project moving, which would enable the service to apply for the rest of the money at a later date.
Fiona Spiers, head of the HLF for Yorkshire and Humber, said the project had “great potential”.
She siad: “This archive is truly extraordinary – a rich source of the minutiae of daily life in the West Riding which gives us a fascinating insight into the triumphs and the tragedies of 19th-century existence.”
The archives’ current home, the Registry of Deeds building on Newstead Road, was deemed ‘not fit for purpose’ in a survey last year.
