Barbara Hepworth's hospital drawings
A COLLECTION of Barbara Hepworth drawings depicting a life-saving operation will go on show in October.
The sculptor produced a collection of around 80 hospital drawings in the 1940s when she was invited into an operating theatre in Exeter.
And an exhibition of about 30 of the images will open at the Hepworth gallery in October.
The inspiration for the exhibition came about when Hepworth’s daughter Sarah was rushed to hospital to be treated for an infection of the thigh.
And she later wrote about the drawings saying she was inspired by “the co-ordination between human beings all dedicated to the saving of a life” and “the way that unity of idea and purpose dictated a perfection of concentration, movement, and gesture”.

The exhibition, featuring several drawings never before shown to the public, will run from Saturday, October 27 until Wednesday, February 13.
