POOR exam results have led a Junior and Infant school to become an academy.

Ledger Lane J&I School is set to convert to an academy on December 1.

A report prepared for Wakefield Council’s cabinet committee said: “Ledger Lane J&I School was deemed satisfactory at the last inspection in November 2011 and applied on this basis.”

It added: “Results at Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are below national averages. There is a downward trend in results. The school requires a sponsored conversion to secure improvement in pupil outcomes.”

The new academy will be one of two in Wakefield to join the Outwood Grange Academy Trust (OGAT), which sponsors a number of academies nationally.

The OGAT will be accountable and responsible for the performance of Ledger Lane J&I school in the future.

The decision to convert to an academy was made by the school’s governing body back in March this year, and approved by the secretary of state for education in June.

A statement from the governing body in the cabinet report said: “Our key aim is to raise standards and ensure that children achieve or exceed their potential.”

The OGAT will become the employer of the teaching and support staff at the school, and the assets and equipment will transfer from Wakefield Council and the governing body of Ledger Lane J&I School to the OGAT.

Headteacher Jane Clayton said: “We have chosen to become and academy so we are very excited. It’s a fantastic opportunity for the children and staff to become part of the ethos of high achievement and outstanding education for all.”
