Area improves as Normanton crime figures tumble
A HUGE reduction in crime has been achieved in the Normanton and Altofts areas, police figures show.
Crime in 2009/10 was down 33.3 per cent on the previous year, according to statistics from the Normanton and Featherstone neighbourhood police team (NPT).
Violent crime reduced by 60.5 per cent, theft of motor vehicles by 63.6 per cent and violent crime was down by 60.5 per cent, the figures show.
Drugs offences were down 25 per cent and burglary from dwellings reduced by 31.3 per cent.
Insp Lisa Kirkland, from Normanton Police Station, said: "The figures show a fabulous improvement in the local area. We have been working with our partner agencies and listening to people's concerns at local police meetings."
She said a spate of shed burglaries on Castleford Road, Normanton, was recently reduced thanks to a plain clothes operation by the NPT.
She added: "People's perception of crime is often that it is a lot higher than it actually is, although if you are in the percentage that has been burgled, for example, it feels like the worst thing that's ever happened to them.
"We are keen to continue working to reduce crime and we encourage people to speak to us and attend the Police and Communities Together (PACT) meetings."
