Big cat spotted

A LARGE black cat is believed to be prowling the Wakefield countryside.

A cyclist claims to have spotted an animal, smaller than a Labrador but bigger than a cat, as he rode along a disused railway track between Wintersett and Newmillerdam on Tuesday night.

Carl Scholes, 39, of Crofton said Labradors tend to have quite square heads but this had a round one and it's tail went up like a big cat's.

Mr Scholes said it was weird seeing such a creature "running around the woods" and he said the spot was "a bit of a danger area."

The sighting has striking similarities to the reports of the Beast of Ossett which made national headlines in 2000. And three years later there was a report of a large black cat stalking the village of Wintersett.

There were also sightings of a panther or puma like beast roaming between Alverthorpe and Ossett in 2006.

If you've had a brush with a Crofton cougar or a Wintersett wildcat, or have any footage of big cats, then please contact the Express on 01924 433013 or via editorial@wakefieldexpress.co.uk
