Big week for our Katherine

IT has been a week to remember for Woolley actress Katherine Kelly.

Monday saw her final scenes as Coronation Street’s Becky McDonald air and the curtain came up on her new play on Tuesday.

And to add to her week on Wednesday, she was awarded a prestigious National Television Award (NTA).

It was a fitting end to Miss Kelly’s career on the cobbles, which started with a short contract but ended six years later with Becky becoming one of the soap’s most popular characters.

Miss Kelly, who started acting in amateur dramatic productions at Theatre Royal Wakefield, is currently performing at the National Theatre in She Stoops to Conquer, which opened on Tuesday, the night after Becky flew to Barbados to start a new life away from Weatherfield.

Her Corrie co-stars Ryan Thomas and Paula Lane collected her award.

Reading a message from Miss Kelly, Miss Lane said: “Hooray. What a wonderful week it’s been for Becky as Becky goes to Barbados and I get an NTA.

“I wish I could give each and everyone who voted for me a power hug Becky style. Thank you for loving her as much as I have, I will never forget it.”

Miss Kelly later tweeted: “Can’t believe it- an NTA!!! And I’m not there! THANK YOU. Overwhelmed with joy!”

The NTAs are voted for by the public. Miss Kelly was nominated for the award in 2008, 2010 and 2011, but this is the first time she has taken the Outstanding Drama Serial Performance trophy.
