Booster for dental care

NHS dental treatment in the city has received a massive boost thanks to an extra £350k investment by Wakefield District Primary Care Trust.

The cash will pay for three new dentists, filling the gaps and extending practices in Wakefield, Castleford and South Elmsall and improving access to NHS dental services for patients across the district.

The new dentists, which will be in place by the end of April, are partly a result of patient feedback which highlighted a demand for more easily accessible NHS dental treatment.

Alan Wittrick, chief executive of the PCT, said: “At the question of health events which were held across the district at the end of last year it was very clear that access to a dentist is a major concern for local people.

“We have responded to that feedback with this latest investment. We hope it will have a positive impact and make it much easier for residents across the district to register with a dentist and to receive regular dental check-ups and treatment.

“In addition we are already looking at further investment for 2008/9 so people should be reassured that NHS dental services are a priority for the PCT.”

To register with one of the new dentists, contact the dental inquiries helpline on 08451 220221.

Patients without an NHS or private dentist who need emergency dental treatment can contact the same number above. An initial assessment will be made over the phone and an appointment will be arranged within 24 hours.

The dental inquiries helpline is open Monday to Friday, 7am to 8pm, and 7am to 3.30pm at weekends and bank holidays.
