Brave teen saves sister

A CHOKING newborn was saved when her big brother sprang into action with life saving skills he had learned on a military preparation course.

Cedelle Dunning was just two days old when she suddenly started choking and stopped breathing in her 16-year-old brother's arms.

But while everyone panicked around him, teenager Daniel Foreman stayed calm and knew exactly what to do, thanks to his first aid training as part of his military preparation course at 299 Parachute Squadron's TA barracks on George Street.

Proud mum Colleen, of Hoyland Road, Kettlethorpe, said: "I just froze and everyone was panicking like mad. We thought we'd lost her, but Daniel was great. He cleared her airways of mucus and got her breathing again while my partner Neil was on the phone to the emergency services."

But just when the family thought the emergency was over, little Cedelle started fitting again.

The mum-of-three said: "There's no doubt about it, she would have choked to death if he hadn't been there.

"The paramedics said we were lucky Daniel was there. It doesn't bear thinking about what might have happened if he hadn't been."

The family have since discovered that little Cedelle has something called an immature gag reflex, which it is hoped she will grow out of, but it means she could choke at any time, including in her sleep.

Daniel, who has turned his life around since starting the military preparation course last year, is now in line for an award from MPC North, who run the course.

Centre manager, Garry Wilson, 45, said: "I was completely moved by the story of Daniel's life-saving actions and we are all so proud of him. He is a great lad and definitely has a bright future ahead of him."

Daniel has his heart set on a career with the Rifles.

He said: "When you learn first aid, you kind of hope you never have to use it, but I am so glad I could. I just did it without thinking. I would have hated anything to happen to my little sister."
