Candidates announced for West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner election

THE FOUR candidates standing in the West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner elections have been announced.

Mark Burns-Williamson, the former chairman of West Yorkshire Police Authority (WYPA) and a local councillor for Castleford, is representing the Labour Party.

Geraldine Carter, a former WYPA member and local councillor in Calderdale, is standing for the Conservatives.

Andrew Marchington, a former WYPA member, former Kirklees community safety committee chairman and local councillor for Kirklees, is representing the Liberal Democrats.

And independent candidate Cedric Christie, a former detective inspector, will also stand for the new role.

The Commissioner will be responsible for holding the Chief Constable and police force to account, draw up a crime plan for West Yorkshire and make sure the police are providing a good service.

Polling will take place on Thursday, November 15, and the winner will be announced the following day.

Voters will be asked to rank their choices in order of preference, in a single transferable vote (STV) system.

Information about the candidates has been made available by the Home Office at www.choosemypcc.co.uk

And leaflets will be distributed to homes next week.

People need to have registered to vote by Wednesday, October 31.
