Cannabis crop ‘for pain relief’

A PAINTER grew cannabis to ease his aches and pains, a court heard.

Robert Grayson, 46, established a “professional but small scale” cannabis farm at his home on Westfield Road, Horbury after researching the subject on the internet and buying the growing equipment from car boot sales.

Wakefield magistrates heard how police seized 21 cannabis plants - with an estimated street value of £8,100 - from Westfield Road on May 20.

The court heard the drugs could have eventually produced 945g of cannabis skunk, which had a potential annual yield of £24,300 if divided up into 3.5g deals.

Prosecutor Diane Gomersall said: “It was clearly a professional but small scale operation.”

Grayson admitted cannabis production.

Caroline Deacon, mitigating, said her client had been a self-employed decorator for a considerable period of time and had started to use cannabis to help ease pains in his joints.

She added: “He does get aches and pains and finds cannabis eases it. It was an experiment which he concedes has gone awry. He was naive when he planted the amount of seeds that he did.”

She said the drugs weren’t fully mature but Grayson had no intention of selling the drugs and they were purely for personal use.

Magistrate Steven Hookham committed the case to Leeds Crown Court, which has greater sentencing powers.
