Cash strapped charity forced to quit city
Ben Manning missing Wakefield boy
A charity which helps disadvantaged youngsters achieve their musical dreams is being forced to quit its city base.
The Ben Manning Music Foundation can no longer afford to rent its base on Northgate.
The charity was set up by the family of Ben Manning - a 17-year-old music fanatic who drowned after a night out in the city in 2011.
Lee Manning, Ben’s brother and charity director said: “In our first year we haven’t had the chance to really build ourselves in the community and make a lasting impression. It has become too expensive for our site on Northgate to remain open.
“We just simply cant afford to stay, we have tried, but we cannot raise the money we need for another year on the site. We don’t want to reduce the amount of work we are doing to pay for a site in the city.
“We don’t want to leave Wakefield, we have built some good connections here, but unfortunately we are going to have to move on.”
The charity funds music lessons for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and works with local schools including City Academy in Eastmoor. The shop and charity base was funded by British Gas but a sponsor for this year has still not been found.
Mr Manning appealed for any businesses or organisations interested in helping the foundation to get in touch.
