Centre launched for youths
A LACK of youth facilities on Normanton's Woodhouse estate is being met with the launch of a new community centre.
The Well Project, which will provide a much-needed meeting place for young people and community groups, has been set up in a former doctor’s surgery on Sunny Bank.
Community project manager Cliff Kay spoke to the local police and knocked on hundreds of doors on the estate to find out what people needed from the centre.
He said anti-social behaviour and facilities for young people were top of the list.
He said: “We were aware of issues around young people, but at the same time there was a lack of facilities. What we didn’t want to do was pre-judge, which is why I spoke to about 300 homes to find what the issues were.”
The centre is already home to Friday coffee mornings and is being used for meetings by Firville Tenants and Residents Association.
The building was made available by Wakefield and District Housing (WDH), which Mr Kay hoped would be a key partner in the project.
He added “We are looking to work with WDH and other partners to develop what we are doing.”
WDH area manager Mark Trafford said: “The Well Project shares our vision to promote social inclusion and it is going to bring many benefits to young people in Normanton and surrounding areas. We look forward to working with the project in the future."
Residents are welcomed to attend the official opening of the centre by Normanton Mayor Mike Burch on Saturday, April 24 at 10.30am.
