Charity in store to beat cancer
BY throwing a £1 coin into a bucket, staff at a Wakefield supermarket helped raise £1 million for the Breast Cancer Campaign.
At the Morrisons store in the Ridings, Diane Johnson was chosen to make the final donation as other representative simultaneously did the same thing across the country.
Diane works as the oven supervisor in the city centre store and was nominated by her colleagues as she raised more than 200 towards the appeal from sales of her charity CD Simply Me.
General manager of the store, Brian Appleton, said: "It was fantastic Diane was nominated to mark the raising of 1 million for our charity of the year. It is the biggest charity total in the history of the company's charitable donations.
"We are all very proud to have reached this milestone and I would personally like to thank all my staff and customers who have taken part in fundraising activities and donated their money to such a worthy cause."
For the past 15 years Morrisons has annually chosen and supported a registered charity. This year staff voted overwhelmingly to support the Breast Cancer Campaign.
Pamela Goldberg, chief executive for the Breast Cancer Campaign, said: "This breathtaking amount of money will play a vital part in helping the Breast Cancer Campaign continue researching the cure for breast cancer.
"I cannot thank customers of Morrisons and their staff enough for their hard work and generosity."
A total of 5,000 was raised in the Ridings store.
