STUDENTS are now learning in a new £7.6 million building.
The Harrison Building was officially opened at Wakefield College yesterday.
It marks the first step of £25m redevelopment project of the Margaret Street campus.
Students and lecturers will now have access to new classrooms, as well as a brand new library and cafe.
Improvements have also included a new walkthrough connecting Newstead Road to Bond Street, disabled parking, drop-off points, terraces, seating areas, cycle stands, and landscaping with trees and plants.
College principal Sam Wright said: “We know the important role Wakefield College has to play in helping everyone achieve their educational goals and this fantastic new facility will go a long way in helping us realise this ambition.
“The inauguration of the building marks an important milestone for the college and its future plans to continue to create state-of-the-art learning facilities for our learners and we are already working on further developments including the museum building on Wood Street.”
The building is named after city-born clockmaker and inventor of the marine chronometer, John Harrison.
The college’s chair of governors Kevin Henry also unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion.
The refurbishment is aimed at transforming the public view from both Wood Street and Bond Street after the college lost out on funding for a bigger £75m project to improve higher education in the city.
The college has also backed Wakefield Council’s call for university studies to take place in the city.
