CYCLING EVENT: Next Tuesday, you can take part in the healthy transport cycling event short group cycle around Pugneys Country Park. The event starts at 6.30pm and if you don't have your own bike, you can hire one for free but this must be pre-booked. Contact 01924 306060.
CHURCH IN WEST BRETTON: George Hargreaves was preacher for morning worship last Sunday. Lessons were read by Christine Robinson, Jennifer McKinlay and George Hargreaves. Organist was John Wilkinson. This Sunday, the Rev Stephen Kelly will be celebrant and preacher for holy communion at 10.30am. There will be a holy communion service on Tuesday at 10.30am.
OVER 50S CLUB: Next Wednesday, members of Bretton Over 50s Club will have a coach outing to Leyburn and Hawes in North Yorkshire. This is a popular outing held each year.
MILLENNIUM BUGS: The West Bretton young people's group Millennium Bugs met in church last Saturday afternoon for their monthly activity.
BOWLS: Last week was the second week of the new season and results were: Ossett and Horbury League: Bretton A 122, Ravensthorpe A 149; Sandal C 147, Bretton B 122; Bretton C 134, Sandal D 136. Heavy Woollen League: Grange Moor A 130, Bretton 134. Wakefield Workshops League: Bretton A 152, Outwood B 114.
WEST BRETON CHURCH COUNCIL: The next meeting of the church council will be on Monday, April 30 at 7.30pm in church.
BRETTON ESTATE ARCHIVE: Due to the impending closure of Bretton Hall as a higher educational establishment, Viscount Allendale last week transferred his family's collection of material known as the Bretton Estate Archive, which has been held at Bretton Hall for the past 30 years, to the Yorkshire Archaeological Society Archive at Claremont in Leeds, where a part of Bretton material is already deposited. Any local researchers should contact YAS for access to the material. The telephone number is 0113 245 6362.
METHODIST CHURCH: The service last Sunday was led by Kathleen Goulder. The two readings were by Doreen Tombs and Mavis Hobson. Beautiful lilies were put in the church this week by Mrs Newton. Yesterday's Fellowship meeting welcomed local historian, Keith Wainwright, who showed slides. This Sunday, the preacher at the 10.45am service is Dr E P Muir.
