Community-minded cubs

KIND-hearted cubs donated boxes crammed with clothes, food and other essential items to help homeless and vulnerable people.

Members of the 8th Horbury Bridge Scout unit handed over teabags, tinned meat and socks to the Community Awareness Programme (CAP).

The cubs, who are based at their hut on Bridge Road, collected the donations as part of their Community Challenge badge.

Karen Cooper, cub scout leader, said: “We asked the cubs to bring in one item which could be useful to someone who was homeless or vulnerable and the response was absolutely fantastic.

“They were very generous and we had so many things. There were half a dozen cartons of long-life milk, bags of sugar, jars of coffee and socks.”

They were handed over to Ernest and Elisabeth Hibbert, who run CAP, last Thursday evening, March 11.

Mrs Cooper, 42, of Rayner Street, first met the couple, at her local church, St Mary’s The Virgin Church, in Horbury Junction.

She asked them if the cubs could visit CAP, which is based on Wood Street in Wakefield, to learn more about its work.

Mrs Cooper said: “I think it’s important for the youngsters to have some idea about issues that exist in the world today, such as homelessness.

“When we went there the cubs were really enthusiastic.

“Although they are only young they understood what CAP was all about and it was quite touching to see their reactions.”

It was the first time CAP has received a donation from a cub group – Mr Hibbert hopes others will follow.

He said: “When the cubs came in we treated them as clients – we got them to sign in, explained how the programme worked and gave them a short presentation on how we came into being.

“It was certainly an eye-opener for them, but they really enjoyed it and one even asked if he could come back.”
