AUDREY KENT; Many former pupils from W.G.H.S. will remember with pleasure the caring way in which this great teacher devoted herself to a better understanding of History, in particular. Last week, she was joined by a group of former colleagues in the refurbished Rinaldi's Restaurant at lunch and I called for a brief chat with Audrey, now settled in Adelaide.
STRAWBERRIES & STEAM: An invitation to come to No 13 Carr Lane ,
Sandal on Saturday July 10 for what is recognised as one of the events of the summer. From 11.00am for ' the rest of day.'. There will be a real opportunity to sit in a lovely garden and watch a great display of steam engines while enjoying a drop of wine with strawberries John and Wendy have built a great reputation for their hospitality-and it helps St James. Church.Tickets priced at 4 for adults,children free. The family have put on this great event for many years, but this , I hear might be the last.
MICHAEL KENT JP: While over for a couple of months from a new home in Australia my former Ward colleague on the 'old' City Council and I had an excellent lunch, reminiscing about life when all Councillors were strict amateurs, in The Star Inn (Michael called it T' Abode of Love). It came as a surprise to me while there to learn that landlord, Phil and Glyniss are moving on after 14 happy years in Sandal at the end of the month.
COFFEE MORNING: The Wakefield branch of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is to holding a Bring & Buy Morning and Book Sale next week ( Wednesday July 14 ) at 411 Milnthorpe Lane, Sandal from 10.00 am to 12 noon .Tickets are 1 to include coffee and biscuits and there will be a tombola and raffle.Everyone is welcome to come along and support this worthy cause, and enjoy a morning in beautiful surroundings
TWIN-TOWN NEWS: Brian and I spent a very happy few days last week in both Herne and Castrop-Rauxel, where we have made many friends in the past.There to attend the Herne Music Festival, with musicians from Belgorod ( Russia) Henin-Beaumont(France) and Konin (Poland) as well as our own Wakefield Arms Jazz Band, we also managed to visit Koln, Dortmund and Munster. Before leaving we met Oberburgomeister Horst Schiereck of Herne at the Town Hall and left flowers on the grave of Willi Pohlmann, who was a Freeman of the City of Wakefield
CAR BOOT SALE: Sandal Cricket Club have built a great reputation for always hosting great sales, their next one will take place this Sunday, July 11 and the advice, as ever is get there early. Good weather assured
CASTLE GROVE FAIR: I am informed the event provisionally proposed to take place in the Park between Barnsley Road and Manygates Lane in late August has been cancelled after investigations by the Council.
SANDAL CRICKET CLUB: June Draw winners are 1st prize (100) No 12 2nd prize (50) No31 and 3rd prize (25) No 2. Tomorrow the First XI are home to Brodsworth M. Match ball sponsor Hoops & Daisy Bridal Wear.
