Cops put kids on bikes

CHILDREN at Gawthorpe's Highfield Special School can now take a ride on their first bicycles.

Police have donated a fleet of lost and stolen bikes to the Gawthorpe Lane school.

Each year officers recover dozens of cycles and make every effort to trace their rightful owners. Many are never reclaimed.

But officers decided the bikes could be put to good use by Highfield pupils.

Headteacher Alan Spalding said the donation meant safe cycle training for the pupils could start a term earlier than planned.

He said: “Our children will benefit enormously. Many, many thanks to West Yorkshire Police.”

Ch Insp Elizabeth Belton said police were glad to find a new home for the bikes.

She said: “We are really pleased that these bicycles are being put to good use, helping children to learn how to ride in safety.”
