6th May 2011. Wakefield Council District Council Elections and Referendum, at Thornes Park Athletics Stadium, Wakefield. Brian Holmes Labour councillor for the Horbury and South Ossett ward.

Coun Brian Holmes will become the city’s next mayor.

The Horbury and South Ossett councillor, who is currently the deputy mayor, will take on the robe and chains at a mayor-making ceremony in May.

And Coun Laurie Harrison, who represents South Kirkby and South Elmsall, will become his deputy.

It means Coun Harrison, who has served as a councillor since the creation of the district council in 1974, will be made mayor in 2014.

Council leader Coun Peter Box said: “I’m confident that Coun Harrison will make an excellent deputy mayor and it is fitting that our longest serving councillor will become Mayor in the year that we celebrate 40 years.”

Coun Harrison said: “This promises to be an exciting year ahead and I’m looking forward to again meeting many different people across the district during this time. I’m sure it will be an experience I will never forget.”

Coun Holmes was first elected as a district councillor in 1997, and has been current mayor Coun Elaine Blezard’s deputy since May last year.
