Crime phone line earns a top award
WAKEFIELD residents are helping lock up criminals – because one in every six calls to Crimestoppers has led to an arrest.
This week Wakefield police were given a Certificate of Excellence from Yorkshire, Humberside and East Midlands Police Regional Crimestoppers Consortium. Chief Supt Callaghan, Wakefield divisional commander, said: “I am delighted. It is another sign of my promise that we will act on all information supplied to us by concerned members of our community.
“It is a credit to the hard work and effort of everyone involved in bringing people to justice.”
“I urge people to ring and support us in ridding the streets of criminals.”
During the past year 138 arrests were made on the back of calls to Crimestoppers. The offences included burglary, drugs and drink-driving.
Last year the division received a similar award and Chief Supt Callaghan was named crimestopper of the month in spring after making a large number of arrests during the first few months of the year – more than in any other of the UK’s 26 police forces.
Gary Howarth, regional co-ordinator for Crimestoppers, said: “This award recognises Wakefield district police’s commitment to the Crimestoppers partnership and demonstrates that the public are confident in a process that empowers local communities to tackle crime head-on without fear of reprisals.
“Wakefield district police are certainly among our top performers in turning information into results.”
Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers, on 0800 555111. Calls are anonymous, and cash rewards are available from 100 up to 1,000. Information can also be given anonymously via www.Crimestoppers-uk.org
