FASCINATING facts about Eastmoor and Portobello emerged when locals delved into their history.
The Faceless Company has been working with residents on a Communities in Time project, which aims to celebrate the history of communities across the district.
More than 250 people in Portobello, Eastmoor, Airedale and Knottingley, have created huge wall hangings that tell the story of each area, which will eventually be displayed at Wakefield One.
Along the way they discovered that Grand National Winner Red Rum and his trainer Ginger McCade once visited Pinders Heath to help publicise the new estate, and Portobello was Wakefield’s first major housing estate.
Timelines created by each community will also be published in a book that will be available through Wakefield Libraries or online through Faceless.
Bev Adams, artistic director for Faceless, said: “Thanks to the funding from Wakefield Council Creative Partners, this project has provided such a rich experience for ourselves and the participants.
“Having at first researched their stories and significant events and then turned them into such beautiful, meaningful art works, we have all been inspired by incredible stories, rich histories and the creative talent of the people of Wakefield.”
