Denby Dale Road drug farm sniffed out

A CANNABIS factory was taken out of business shortly before Christmas.

Police discovered 136 cannabis plants in three rooms of a property on Denby Dale Road, Wakefield on Sunday.

Officers from Wakefield Rural neighbourhood police team (NPT) found the drugs after tip offs from residents.

Insp Richard Clare of Wakefield Rural neighbourhood police team (NPT) said: “This was a very decent find.

“It is obvious that they were not just growing it for themselves, but probably making a lot of money from it.”

After several complaints from neighbours, an officer walked the streets and managed to locate the factory by sniffing out the drug, which has a sweet pungent smell.

Officers then started carrying out checks and made the discovery in the second property they searched.

Insp Clare said there was nobody in the house at the time and inquiries are ongoing to trace the owner and grower.

He added: “This came about thanks to complaints from people about a funny smell.

“We rely on the community to feed us information and this proves that we will act on it.
“We will carry on investigating and appeal for anyone with any information to come forward.”

The plants were at various stages of maturity and have been seized.

The cannabis factory, including lighting and growing equipment was dismantled.

There was a “huge amount” of internal damage to the property and an electricity meter had been tampered with, resulting in unsafe wiring around the house.

Insp Clare added that owners of rental properties should make thorough checks of new clients and make regular property inspections.

Anyone with any information about the cannabis factory should contact the NPT on 101.
