Driver denies he caused midwife’s death in collision

A MAN will face trial after pleading not guilty to causing the death of a midwife.

Jeffrey Walton, 51, appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday charged with causing the death of 36-year-old Maria Micklethwaite by careless or inconsiderate driving in Slack Lane, South Hiendley.

Walton, of Station Road, Ryhill, pleaded not guilty to the charge and will face trial in January.

Mrs Micklethwaite, who was from Carlton, Barnsley, was killed when her pedal bike was involved in a collision with a Ford Focus, which was being driven by Walton, just before 3.30pm on January 13.

Mrs Micklethwaite – who was a midwife at Rotherham Hospital - died after the crash.

The Express understands she had been married just a few months before the incident.

She had delivered more than 200 babies at the hospital where she worked.

Walton was given unconditional bail.
