Emergency training for youngsters
Martial arts enthusiasts picked up some tips on handling emergencies when police, fire and ambulance chiefs shared their wisdom last week.
About 150 young members of Ossett Martial Arts Academy were taught about 999 calls, home fire safety and drugs, when speakers from the emergency services visited their Dewsbury Road dojo.
Then youngsters, aged between four and 14, filled out questionnaires at the end of the evening to show what they had learned, and were given certificates to take home.
Sgt Kieron Allen, who works in Normanton, Steve Kain, of Ossett Fire Station, and Linda Milsom and Sharron Martin, of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, lent their hands to the event.
Jan Crookes, co-owner of the academy, said members frequently teach martial arts in schools and spreading safety messages was an important part of their work.
She said: "A lot kids don't know how to make a 999 call – but it's good for them to know.
"It was nice to see some of the parents getting involved, and I think everyone has learned a lot."
Ossett Martial Arts Academy has taught taekwondo in Ossett since 1998, and now has 250 members.
Steve Kain, watchmanager at Ossett Fire Station, said: "It is important we take every opportunity to get a good safety message across to young people.
"We are always trying to reduce the number of people killed in accidents, particularly on the roads.
"Martial arts is a lifestyle for these young individuals and safety is a large part of it, so I'm sure they have taken the messages on board."
Mr Kain said his team is offering free home fire safety checks, and encouraged people to call 0800 587 4536 for more information.
