Artists' impressions of the new Westgate station

THESE exclusive images show the brand new £8.1m Westgate Station that will be built next year.

A new station building, more retail facilities, a travel centre, a First Class Lounge, new waiting area and ticket gates are all part of the project, which will be complete by October next year.

There will also be a new footbridge and lifts linking the platforms.

East Coast has been working with Wakefield Council, Metro, Network Rail and English Cities Fund, and said construction would start at the end of this year.

East Coast stations and property director Tim Hedley-Jones said: “Completion of the new station next year will provide a stunning new gateway to a city which is really going places, a key destination for both business and leisure travellers.”

The council also announced this week that they were looking to buy the Orangery gallery, on Back Lane, for £400,000 and to begin a partnership with Beam that would protect the building’s future during the regeneration of the Westgate and Merchant Gate areas.

A consultation exhibition on the station will take place at Wakefield One on Wednesday from noon until 6.30pm, and at the station itself on Thursday from 1pm until 8pm.
