Focus on landfill breaches

ENVIRONMENTAL breaches at a controversial landfill site will come under the spotlight at Wakefield Council's cabinet this week.

Councillors will discuss possible enforcement action against Welbeck Landfill Site following uncontrolled gas emissions last year and a more recent diesel spillage into the Calder.

The Environment Agency monitors the site, but has not taken action against site operator Welbeck Waste Management.

But action group Residents Against Toxic Scheme has demanded legal action.

A report to the cabinet said: "Should the EA successfully prosecute WWM on a major event, not only would the company be fined a significant amount by the courts, but also the council may then be in a position to consider action under the terms of the lease."

The report said a newsletter was being prepared to inform residents in Normanton and Altofts of developments at the site.
