Former Wakefield MP Walter Harrison dies aged 91
Walter Harrison given Freedom or the City April 2003
A FORMER Wakefield MP and deputy chief whip of the Labour Party has died aged 91.
Walter Harrison, of Sandal, was a city MP from 1964 up to his retirement in 1987.
He was deputy chief whip between 1974 and 1979, and was seen to have played a key role in holding the government together despite the fact it had such a small majority and, at times, a minority.
The National Theatre is currently running a stage show based on Mr Harrison’s role, starring Philip Glenister, called This House.
He died on Friday.
Please leave your tributes as comments or contact Colin Strachan on 01924 433 013.
